Google has rolled out a major update to Search Console: AI citation attribution reports. For the first time, website owners can see exactly which of their pages are being cited in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, along with click-through data and competitive comparisons.
What the new reports show
The AI Citation Attribution panel in Search Console provides three key data points:
- Citation frequency
- How often your pages appear as cited sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode answers. This includes both direct URL citations and mentions where your domain is referenced without a link.
- Click-through rates
- The percentage of users who click through from AI answers to your site. Google reports that AI citations have a click-through rate of 8.3% — higher than traditional organic search for many niches.
- Competitive benchmarking
- Where your site ranks against competitors in AI citations for shared queries. This includes a "Share of Model" percentage similar to share of voice in traditional SEO.
How to access the reports
The AI Citation Attribution reports are rolling out gradually starting September 2026. To check if you have access:
- Log into Google Search Console
- Navigate to "Engagement" in the left sidebar
- Select "AI Citations" from the dropdown
- Choose whether to view AI Overviews or AI Mode data
Note: You must have verified ownership of your property in Search Console, and the reports require at least 10 AI citation events in the past 90 days to display data.
What this means for your GEO strategy
This update validates the importance of AI citation tracking. For the first time, Google — which controls both traditional search and AI search — is acknowledging that citation attribution is a metric worth measuring and reporting on.
The measurement gap is closed.
Previously, SEOs had to manually track AI citations across 4+ platforms. With Google's official reporting, citation visibility becomes a first-class SEO metric — at least for Google's AI features. Third-party tools like GazeRank complement this by tracking citations across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity.
Action items
- Verify your property in Search Console if you haven't already — you need this access to see AI citation data.
- Review your AI citation performance — identify which pages are getting cited most often and which have untapped potential.
- Optimize for citation frequency — focus on the structural elements that lead to citations: answer-first content, entity-rich headings, structured data.
- Track citation position — citations that appear earlier in AI answers drive more clicks. Optimize your content to be a primary source.
- Monitor competitor benchmarks — use the competitive data to identify gaps in your AI visibility strategy.
Go beyond Google
Track your citations across all AI platforms
While Google's new reports only cover AI Overviews and AI Mode, GazeRank tracks your citation frequency across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google — giving you a complete picture of your AI visibility in one dashboard.
