If you're still tracking SEO ranking positions as your primary visibility metric, you're flying blind in an AI-first world. Traditional SERP rankings tell you whether a user saw your page in a list of blue links — but they say nothing about whether your brand showed up in an AI-generated answer, which is increasingly where attention goes first.
A 2026 study by Semrush found that over 40% of users now start complex queries in an AI assistant rather than a search engine, and the share of queries that result in a zero-click AI answer has climbed past 60% in many verticals. Rank #1 on Google may matter less than whether you're cited at all in the AI's response.
The five metrics that matter for AI visibility
Unlike traditional SEO, where you can look at a SERP and see your ranking, AI visibility metrics require a different approach. You need to track the output of AI models — what they actually say — not just whether a crawler can reach your page.
Share of Model (SoM)
The percentage of AI-generated answers across your tracked queries that include your brand or domain as a cited source. Think of it as 'share of voice' for the AI era.
Target: Track against competitors weekly. >5% in your niche puts you in the top tier.
Citation frequency
How often your domain appears as a citation (not just a mention) in AI answers. Citations link to your content; mentions do not.
Target: Aim for citation-to-mention ratios above 1.0 — quality over quantity.
Answer rank
The position of your citation within the AI answer (first, second, third, or in a list). First-position citations get the most click-throughs.
Target: Optimize for first or second position — beyond that, visibility drops sharply.
Query coverage
The percentage of your tracked keyword set for which you appear as a citation at least once. Low coverage means blind spots in your GEO.
Target: Coverage below 30% means your content isn't reaching the right queries.
Crawl accessibility
Whether your site allows AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) to read your content. A blocked crawler = 0 citations from that source.
Target: All four major AI crawlers should be allowed. Check robots.txt regularly.
Why Share of Model (SoM) is the North Star
Share of Model measures what percentage of AI answers in your tracked query set cite your domain. It's the AI equivalent of share of voice, and it directly correlates with traffic from AI referrals — which now account for an estimated 15–25% of all organic traffic to B2B sites (source: Brand AI-search tracking adoption study, 2026).
The key difference from traditional SEO: in a SERP, position 1 gets ~30% of clicks. In an AI answer, being cited at all is the gate — and being cited first among the sources gets the bulk of the residual clicks from users who click through to read more.
How to track these metrics in practice
Most teams try to prompt-engineer their way to visibility, but the real approach is simpler:
- Define your query set. List 50–200 questions your customers would ask an AI. Use customer support tickets, forum questions, and keyword tools to build the list.
- Query each platform regularly. Submit the same queries to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Record what each cites, its position, and whether it links to your domain.
- Calculate SoM.
SoM = (your citations / total AI answers) × 100per platform and overall. - Correlate with changes. When you update content (add schema, change robots.txt, publish llms.txt), re-check the same queries to see what moved.
What Google's ranking updates mean for AI visibility
Google's August 2026 core update expanded its E-E-A-T systems to evaluate content based on how well it translates to AI-ready signals: structured data completeness, answer-first content, and entity clarity. Sites that optimized for these signals saw measurable increases in AI citation frequency even when traditional rankings stayed flat.
The inverse is also true: sites with strong traditional SEO but poor structural signals (no schema, unclear headings, no llms.txt) are increasingly invisible to AI answers, even at the top of the Google SERP.
