Google Search Console AI Citation Reports
New Search Console reports show which of your pages are cited in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
TL;DR
Google Search Console now includes AI Citation Attribution reports. For the first time, you can see which of your pages Google's AI models are citing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus click-through data and competitive comparisons.
What the AI Citation Attribution reports show
The new reports, rolling out gradually in September 2026, provide:
Citation frequency by page
Shows how often each of your pages appears as a cited source in AI answers. Includes both direct URL citations and brand mentions.
Click-through rates from AI answers
Tracks how often users click through from AI citations to your site. Google reports an 8.3% CTR for AI citations — higher than traditional organic search for many niches.
Competitor benchmarking
Compares your citation frequency against competitors for shared queries, showing your "Share of Model" — the AI-era equivalent of share of voice.
How to access the reports
The AI Citation Attribution panel is available in Search Console. To check your access:
- Log into Google Search Console
- Navigate to "Engagement" in the left sidebar
- Select "AI Citations" from the dropdown
- Choose AI Overviews or AI Mode data
Note: You must have verified property ownership. Reports require at least 10 AI citation events in the past 90 days to display data.
What this means for your GEO strategy
This update validates that AI citation tracking is an essential part of modern SEO. For the first time, Google — which controls both traditional search and AI search — is providing official citation attribution metrics.
However, these reports only cover Google's AI features (AI Overviews and AI Mode). To track citations across ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, you still need a dedicated GEO monitoring platform.
Action items
- Verify your property — Ensure you have Search Console access to view AI citation data.
- Review your cited pages — Identify which content is getting cited and what makes it citation-worthy.
- Optimize for position — First-position citations get the most click-throughs. Improve your content structure.
- Complement with cross-platform tracking — Use GazeRank to track citations across all AI engines, not just Google.
