How AI Citations Work

An AI citation happens when an AI system uses your website as a source, supporting link, or reference in an answer. Citations are not a ranking position and are not guaranteed—but they can show that your content was selected as useful evidence for a specific query.

Simple example

A user asks an AI system, “How can I improve website accessibility?” The AI produces an answer and includes links to a few sources. If one of those links is your accessibility guide, that is an AI citation.

What usually happens before a citation

01

Your page must be discoverable

The system needs a way to find the page. For search-backed AI experiences, that usually starts with normal crawlability and indexability.

02

The page needs to answer the query

A page is more useful when it directly addresses the user’s question rather than forcing the reader to assemble the answer from vague marketing copy.

03

The source needs clear context

Clear authorship, organization details, citations, supporting evidence, and accurate claims can help users and systems understand who is behind the information.

04

The AI system chooses its sources

The final source selection can vary by prompt, engine, location, time, and the model’s retrieval process. No tool can guarantee inclusion.

A citation is not the same as a mention

Mention

The AI names your brand or product in its answer, but may not link to your website or identify it as a source.

Citation

The AI provides your domain or page as a linked source, supporting reference, or attribution for a claim.

What you can influence

  • ✓ Publish pages that answer meaningful customer questions directly.
  • ✓ Make key content accessible to crawlers and normal search indexing.
  • ✓ Use clear headings, concise summaries, and logical page structure.
  • ✓ Show who wrote or published the content and support major claims.
  • ✓ Keep information accurate, specific, current, and genuinely useful.

What you cannot control

  • • Whether a model selects your page for a particular answer.
  • • Which competitors or publishers appear beside you.
  • • The exact wording, ranking, or placement of a source link.
  • • Changes to a platform’s retrieval system or citation interface.
