Headings and Page Structure
Clear headings help visitors scan a page and help search systems understand the topics covered by your content.
Use one clear page title
The main title should describe the page accurately. It should tell visitors what they will learn or what they can do on the page.
- Use one primary H1 heading for the main topic.
- Make the title specific instead of using vague wording.
- Keep the title consistent with the page title and description.
Organize sections logically
Use H2 headings for major sections and H3 headings for supporting sections inside them. A good heading structure works like an outline: readers should be able to understand the page by reading only the headings.
- Do not choose headings only because they look visually large.
- Do not skip from H2 to H4 without a clear reason.
- Use descriptive headings such as “How to improve page speed” instead of “More information.”
Write for scanning
Most people scan before they read. Short sections, meaningful headings, lists, and direct opening sentences make a page easier to understand on both desktop and mobile.
- Put the most important answer near the beginning of a section.
- Break long paragraphs into smaller blocks.
- Use tables or lists when comparing several items.
