Internal Linking Basics

Internal links connect pages on your own website. They help visitors find related information and help search systems discover important pages.

Link related pages together

When one page naturally leads to another, add a link. For example, an article about page speed can link to image optimization, technical SEO, and accessibility.

  • Link from general guides to more specific explanations.
  • Link from important pages to the pages you most want people to find.
  • Avoid adding links that are unrelated to the section.

Use descriptive anchor text

Anchor text is the visible text of a link. It should help users understand what they will find after clicking.

  • Use “read the robots.txt guide” instead of “click here.”
  • Keep the wording natural and concise.
  • Do not repeat the same keyword unnaturally across every link.

Avoid orphan pages

An orphan page has no useful internal links pointing to it. Even if the page is listed in a sitemap, visitors and crawlers may have difficulty discovering it within the broader site structure.

  • Add new articles to a relevant category or index page.
  • Link older related pages to newer content when appropriate.
  • Check that important pages are reachable from the main navigation or a useful hub page.
